1 in 3 female students suffer from mental health problems in the UK, a survey suggests.
This was compared with a fifth of male undergraduates, the YouGov survey of 1,061 students found.
The study found 27% of the students asked had mental health problems. This grew 45% among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.
Universities have been working hard to develop good relationships with the NHS and create good services for students.
77% of students who said they suffered from mental health problems, had depression and 74% suffer from anxiety.
In May, student suicides had risen to their highest number since 2007 when the records began, and published by ONS. The figures for 2014, showed 130 suicides in England and Wales were among full time students aged over 18. 91 of those deaths were male students and 33 were females.
There has been concern about the amount of mental health support provided by universities. The survey showed students were generally aware of the mental health services offered by their universities.
Nearly 18% of students had made contact with university mental health services and of those who had, nearly 9 in 10 had seen a counsellor. 30% of males and 27% of females said they would not feel comfortable talking about their illness with friends or family.
