Teenage girl kept in cell for 44 hours with no food or water.

Prison cell

A report recently published found that a teenage girl was detained in police custody for 44 hours, WITHOUT food or water.

The teenager was held in the cell as part of the mental health act, which allows people to be detained for up to 72 hours in a hospital or police cell. But this does not mean they should go without food and water. Apparently the force attempted to give the girl food and drink on many occasions but she declined.

Understandably the girl would had been terrified being placed into a police cell rather than a safer environment in a psychiatric hospital.

But this is not the first case like this we have seen recently. Back in November of 2014 the Devon and Cornwall police force tweeted about another teenage girl who had to be placed in a prison cell rather than a hospital. It is completely unacceptable to believe there were no beds anywhere in the UK for her to stay.

According to the officer, who tweeted to find her a bed said that 750 mental health patients had been placed into prison cells last year in Devon and Cornwall.

An assessment in November found that 263 children were sectioned under the mental health act and placed in police cells in 2013. The study also found that around 6,000 adults were detained.

MP’s are saying the amount of people with mental health issues being held in police cells is a ‘scandal’.

This number seems extremely high considering a study by a Washington-based foundation found that the NHS has the best healthcare system, who rated the care superior in comparison to countries that spend more on health care.
